Best Practices for Starting or Transferring Internet Service When Moving

A step-by-step playbook for checking availability, scheduling the install, transferring service, and avoiding downtime when you move.

If you want internet working on move-in day, you need a process. Not a guess. The best move is to think in stages: availability, provider choice, scheduling, activation, and disconnect timing.

This guide is written for movers in San Antonio and New Braunfels, but the framework works almost anywhere.

Step 1: check exact address availability

AT&T tells movers to start by entering the new address in its availability checker. Verizon and T-Mobile also require an address check for home internet eligibility. This is the foundation of the entire decision.

Step 2: decide whether to transfer or start new service

If you like your current provider and it serves the new home, transferring can be easier than canceling and starting from scratch. AT&T's moving support explicitly says transferring is easier when service is available. Spectrum also offers a move-service path for existing customers.

Step 3: schedule before the move, not after

  • Target at least 7 days before move-in for provider comparison
  • Target 5 to 7 days before move-in for ordering and scheduling
  • Target 2 to 3 days before move-in for confirmation and backup planning
  • Have a hotspot or temporary backup plan if internet is mission-critical

Step 4: verify the connection before disconnecting the old one

Do not assume the install is finished just because the appointment ended. Test your devices, run a speed check, and make sure the account activation is complete. Only then should you finalize the disconnect at the prior address.

Step 5: close the loop with receipts and confirmations

Save your order emails, technician appointment notices, equipment serials, and return receipts. If there is ever a billing question, those records will save you time fast.
