How to Cancel Internet Service Without Extra Fees or Surprise Charges
A clean playbook for canceling or moving internet service without billing overlap, unreturned equipment charges, or avoidable confusion.
Canceling internet sounds easy until the bills keep coming, the modem is still on your account, or the move happens before the new connection is actually live.
The good news is that most of the pain is preventable. A clean cancellation plan is really a timing plan.
First decide whether you should cancel or transfer
AT&T's moving guidance says customers do not have to cancel service when they move and that it is easier to transfer service to the new address if service is available there. Spectrum also has a moving flow for existing customers who want to transfer service to a new address.
If the same provider serves the new home and you are happy with the service, transfer first. If the provider is not available or no longer makes sense, then cancel after the replacement service is working.
Avoid the most common cancellation mistakes
- Do not cancel before the new service is live and tested
- Keep your confirmation numbers, screenshots, and chat transcripts
- Return rented equipment quickly and keep the return receipt
- Check the next bill to verify the disconnect actually posted
- Use the provider's official moving or cancellation path instead of relying on assumptions
Spectrum equipment return best practices
Spectrum says customers can return equipment to any Spectrum store. It also says equipment can be brought to a UPS Store, and if a customer cannot visit a UPS or Spectrum store, they can request a home shipment return kit by contacting Spectrum.
That means you should treat the return receipt like tax paperwork. Keep it until the next billing cycle clears and the account balance shows correctly.
If something goes wrong
The FTC recommends contacting the company first and keeping copies of your cancellation request and notes from any conversations. If the dispute remains unresolved, the FCC's complaint center accepts complaints for internet service issues including billing, equipment, and service concerns.
